The Mill Valley Film Festival wrapped its 26th great year on Sunday, October 12th, 2003, with 40,000+ tickets sold and over 200 guests for close to 200 film programs, the Festival had over 100 sold-out shows and a bevy of fun parties and rousing musical events – one in which Bonnie Raitt joined legend Calypso Rose on-stage at the world-renowned Sweetwater nightclub in Mill Valley.
Festival Gems
Premieres garnering Festival buzz included features Beat the Drum (David Hickson), Nightingale in a Music Box (Hurt McDermott) and Spin (Jamie Redford); documentaries Sophiatown (Pascale Lamche) and Calypso Dreams (Geoffrey Dunn and Michael Horne). International features with distribution buzz included two Iranian films, Paradise Is Somewhere Else and Gipsy.
Fest Guests
Festival audiences engaged in great onstage Q&As with the likes of Directors Christine Jeffs (Sylvia, US Premiere): Peter Webber (Girl with the Pearl Earring); Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent); Peter Hedges (Pieces of April); Keith Gordon and Actor Robin Wright-Penn (The Singing Detective); Tributees Lili Taylor, Peter Coyote and Denys Arcand; Director Carl Franklin and Actor Sanaa Lathan (Out of Time); Actor Sam Elliott (Off the Map) (accompanied by wife, Katharine Ross who came to cheer him on); and Critic Leonard Maltin, who introduced the Charlie Chaplin classic Modern Times.
